Rat Dixon

At the Simmons Home, Payson, Utah,  1915
Original Painting - Acrylic on Canvas, 8.8 sq. ft. (32" x 40") By Artist Frank M. Thomas
(Collection of  William Wright, Holden, Utah)

Historical Background: About 1915 the Simmons family, early Mormon settlers of Payson, Utah, became widowed, by the untimely death of their father and husband.   The very meager Widow's funds available were insufficient to sustain a widow and large family of children.   So, their mother did as others in this dillema; she began to take in washing for others, and any odd job to survive.
An old gentleman, a poverty stricken loner, referred to as 'Rat Dixon, took notice of their plight, and began delivering fire wood, food, ribbons for the girl's hair, gifts.   (The Dixons were also early Mormon settlers of Payson.)   He wrapped his feet and legs with 'gunny sacks' against the cold of winter...tied his hat down around his ears   Drove a miss-matched, poor quality team and wagon.   Kind old 'Rat Dixon' once even brought a dressed hog ready to be cut up and cooked; he truly was a man with a golden heart.   He looked after them, the family survived.
As described many years later, by sisters Edith & Rebecca Simmons, "Dear Old Rat Dixon.   A fine old friend.   He did much to lighten the burden.   This old man indeed had the spirit of Christ."
