A Stick Pull In Nauvoo

The Prophet Joseph Smith Loved Physical Contests

Original Art Canvas, 11 sq. ft. (40" x 40")  by Artist Frank Thomas“

Collection of David & Becky O'Neill, Moses Lake, Washington

Background:    There were few manly sports in which the Prophet Joseph wasn't enthusiastic about, or at least have a try at…and many in which he excelled.   For example, he wrestled, and wrestled effectively.    He jumped at the mark.    In this activity you simply drew a mark on the ground, then jumped and marked where you landed, then challenged someone else to match or exceed the jump.    He pulled up stakes: Here two men faced each other, placing feet against feet, grasping hands and then pulled.    Another version of that [very much similar to pulling stakes] is 'the stick pull,' in which, face to face, while sitting on the ground, you hold a strong pole or stick, like a broomstick, and then pull.   The stronger of the two maintains his grip, and his hands don’t slip.   Either the weaker participant's hands slip, or the stronger one remains seated on the ground while his opponent is lifted off (the ground).

"Brother Joseph" was well known to further sports among those around him; always time for competition.   "With the boys Joseph often played baseball and variations on 'quoits' [a game similar to the game of horseshoes, often using a flat stone as the object to throw].   He was quick to create games with prizes, including booby prizes.   On occasion, especially when he had beaten a challenger, he would say something like, "You must not mind this."   He especially loved the 'stick pull' and stated: "When I am with the boys I make all the fun I can for them."   (Truman G. Madsen, Joseph Smith the Prophet [1989', 20-21).
